Fig. 1. Changes in total muscle creatine (Cr + PCr) after five days of supplementation with creatine (Cr) or creatine with carbohydrate (Cr + CHo).

Can the increase in total muscle creatine improve performance, and if so what kind of activities are improved? Supplementation with creatine has been shown to improve repeated sprint or high-intensity activities, particularly if the bouts of activity are between 5 and 30 seconds. Longer bouts of repeated exercise or single bouts are generally not influenced. Furthermore, studies in which strength and power training are employed also generally result in gains in muscle mass, strength, and power. The effect of supplementation on performance in game simulations has not yet been elucidated, although there is likelihood that maintenance of sprint performance in intermittent bouts of activity such as in soccer is likely to happen.
